Garden Designer with Own Company

Luciano Giubbilei – Graduated 1995

It all started, as things often do in Italy, with a party. When Luciano Giubbilei was 20, he was living in Siena, west Italy, and was entertaining his friends on a regular basis. “My friends would come over and I would make my garden, my outside space, really nice with candles, lighting and set the table for dinner,” he explains. “I really enjoyed impressing with a little bit of theatre! Without much career direction at that time, I soon realised that I wanted to create outdoor rooms for a living.”

After this realisation he was faced with a stark choice: he either had to train as a landscape architect for the next six years in Italy, or head to England and train as a garden designer (there are no specific garden design courses in his native country). He took the latter route: his English girl-friend recommended that he wrote to the Royal Horticultural Society for guidance, and by September 1994 he was enrolled at the Inchbald School of Design in London. “There really is only one place to go if you want to learn about garden design,” he smiles. “In Italy we may have a lot of great gardens, but we are not a nation of gardeners – unlike the British.”
