This two-week drawing course is an intensive introduction to the mechanics of interior design drawing and is relevant to students who have no previous experience of formal draughting or informal drawing. It is an excellent preparation for those embarking on the Certificate in Interior Decoration, Diploma in Architectural Interior Design, Postgraduate Diploma and MA in Architectural Interior Design courses at the Inchbald School of Design, or similar interior design courses, but can also benefit those who wish to refresh skills and working designers who need to develop their drawing ability.

Intensive, but informally run, the course will help you to gain confidence and the ability to use visual communication to express your design ideas. You will learn formal orthographic drawing procedures, the architectural conventions of plans, section and elevation drawings produced at the drawing board, combining elevations, sections and axonometrics. As a complement to this formal draughting you will explore three-dimensional drawing and sketching, indoor and outdoor, with the introduction of shadow, texture and simple rendering techniques. You will also examine simple graphics and presentation techniques to complete the picture of communication skills required to work as a designer.

Interior Design Drawing – course aims

  • To introduce students to two- and three-dimensional architectural drawing conventions.
  • To develop drawing, sketching and recording ability.
  • To develop skills in line, shade and texture drawing techniques.
  • To provide an increased skills level for entry to further interior design and decoration courses.
