Overview

The Glyndwr Certificate in Garden Design teaches awareness and appreciation of garden design, helping students to analyse, evaluate and communicate their design skills.

Students learn about the evolution of styles and the history of garden design alongside the balance between functional, technical and aesthetic elements. The course establishes the overarching principles of garden design, incorporating the core elements of scale, form, light, texture and colour.

Course content

Students explore the development of ideas and methods of visual communication, learning to consider and communicate their responses to clients’ requirements.

Lectures and studio-based learning introduce the skills required to approach the design of a residential garden. Interactive studio discussions facilitate the exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences. Students complete a design scheme with full notes, keys, schedules and specifications, providing creative opportunity and skills building. Learning to evaluate and categorise information is taught alongside the regulatory procedures, technical references and the specification of materials. A written, reflective assignment concludes the course.

Who is it aimed at?

Students considering the garden design profession who require a short course with the option to extend to further study. This course forms the first part of the BA (Hons) in Garden Design, providing 60 credits at level 4 which is a natural extension to a formal academic qualification.
