Overview

Throughout the course, students will develop an understanding of key design principles, spatial planning, colour theory, materials, lighting, furniture selection, whilst acquiring the skills needed for professional practice. They will also gain experience in communicating design concepts through technical drawings, digital design software, and professional presentations.

The programme is structured to reflect current industry standards and expectations, ensuring that graduates are well prepared for employment or further study. With a focus on both individual creativity and professional practice, students will learn how to respond to client briefs, manage design projects, and create functional, aesthetically engaging interior spaces for residential, commercial, and hospitality environments.

By completing this professionally validated qualification, students will demonstrate to employers that they have acquired the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies required to begin a career in interior design and fully contribute within a professional design studio.

Course content

This course will help you develop a comprehensive understanding of interior architectural design. Key areas of study include space planning, ergonomics, structural alterations, planning regulations, building services, and the interpretation and delivery of client briefs. You will also explore colour theory, texture, materials, lighting, joinery, decorative techniques, and a range of design methodologies, enabling you to develop and deliver your own creative design solutions.

Design communication is a central focus of the programme. You will learn to present your ideas using a variety of traditional and digital techniques, including hand-drawn and computer-generated orthographic drawings, freehand sketching and collage. Presenting visually and verbally in small groups with encourage the development of essential skills for communicating with clients.

The commercial interior design modules examine the design of hospitality and public spaces, while also developing your understanding of technical detailing and construction principles. To enhance your professional development, the course includes opportunities for workplace observation, providing valuable experience before graduation.

In the final semester at level 6, you will produce a written report documenting the development of your self-selected major design project, from initial concept through to the final proposal. This culminates in the presentation of a fully resolved spatial and decorative design solution that demonstrates your individual creative, technical, and professional skills.

Who is it aimed at?

This course is designed for students who aspire to build a successful career in professional interior design and are looking to gain a recognised, professionally validated qualification. It provides a strong foundation in the creative, technical, and practical skills required to work within the interior design industry.

Full time: On campus

  • BA (Hons) Architectural Interior Design is a two-year, full-time course on campus with an exit point after the first year (level 5), which provides a Diploma of Higher Education, also validated by Wrexham University.
  • Applicants are required to attend an interview prior to receiving an offer for this course. Academic exemptions may be granted following submission of a Recognition of Learning or Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning, in accordance with the university general regulations and/or relevant professional experience.
  • Students must be aged 18 or over with ‘A’ levels / sufficient UCAS points or equivalent. A good command of written and spoken English and basic computer skills are required. Those wishing to study on a visa may need to take an approved English Language test.
  • Fees: Two-year, BA(Hons) £51,600 (inc VAT).
  • Fees: One-year, Diploma of Higher Education £38,115 (inc VAT).
