Overview

This course establishes the principles of design and decoration with a focus on residential projects and gives students a grounding in the skills required to think well about space and to see a project from inception to delivery.

Whether you are considering a career in interior design or looking to enhance your existing professional skills, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the discipline and teaches a range of core skills. It can be studied as a stand-alone course or as the first stage of the BA (Hons) in Architectural Interior Design and students, on successful completion of the course, will have accrued 60 credits at Level 4.

Course content

The Wrexham Certificate in Interior Design and Decoration introduces you to the analytical, creative, technical and contextual principles that underpin successful interior design, and provides students with a range of core skills. It also requires students to think reflectively about their learning.

Through the course you will learn how to observe and analyse interiors; formulate design briefs; explore and refine different design possibilities through spatial planning, group discussion and 3D computer modelling (using SketchUp) as well as developing ways of sourcing and putting together schemes of decoration, and presentational skills to enable you to communicate your ideas to clients effectively.

Your development is supported by the study of design history through lectures and museum/historical interiors visits as well as by lectures in a wide range of technical subjects from colour, pattern and texture, ergonomics, lighting and construction, to fabrics, wallpapers, carpets, paint etc. You are also given a grounding in the professional skills required to run projects and to set yourself up in business (including training in EstiSoft) and you will experience something of the pressures of working in a live design studio.

At the end of the course, you are required to write a reflective essay that encourages you to analyse and categorise what you have learned.

The course encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking and resources you to create distinctive, functional and individual interiors. Throughout the course you will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your developing design and technical abilities. All students who have taken courses through the year are eligible to exhibit at the school's Graduate Exhibition in July which serves to showcase their work to the profession.

Who is it aimed at?
