Overview

This course establishes the principles of design and decoration with a focus on residential projects and gives students a grounding in the skills required to think well about space and to see a project from inception to delivery.

Whether you are considering a career in interior design, looking to enhance your existing professional skills or simply pursuing a lifelong passion, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the discipline and teaches a range of core skills.

Course content

The Inchbald Certificate in Interior Design and Decoration introduces you to the creative, technical and contextual principles and skills that underpin successful interior design.

Through the course you will learn how to observe and analyse interiors; formulate design briefs; explore and refine different design possibilities through spatial planning, group discussion and 3D computer modelling (using SketchUp) as well as developing ways of sourcing and putting together schemes of decoration, and presentational skills to enable you to communicate your ideas to clients effectively.

Your development is supported by the study of design history through lectures and museum/historical interiors visits as well as by lectures in a wide range of technical subjects from colour, pattern and texture, ergonomics, lighting and construction, to fabrics, wallpapers, carpets, paint etc. You are also given a grounding in the professional skills required to run projects and to set yourself up in business (including training in EstiSoft) and you will experience something of the pressures of working in a live design studio.

The course encourages curiosity, creativity and critical thinking and resources you to create distinctive, functional and individual interiors. Throughout the course you will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your developing design and technical abilities. All students who have taken courses through the year are eligible to exhibit at the school's Graduate Exhibition in July which serves to showcase their work to the profession.

Who is it aimed at?

Whether your ambition is to redesign your own home, to take up interior design and decoration as a profession, or to progress to the Inchbald Diploma, this Certificate provides the ideal first step.
